Jeffrey James Higgins is a former reporter, former elected official, and retired supervisory special agent, who now writes creative nonfiction, essays, and novels.

Jeffrey has appeared on CNN Newsroom, Investigation Discovery, CNN Declassified, and other television programs, radio shows, and podcasts. He was a 2018 finalist for best essay and published in the Adelaide Literary Award Anthology 2018 Essays. He has been published in The Writing Disorder Literary Journal, Crack the Spine Literary Magazine, Adelaide Literary Magazine, American Conservative, Trail Runner Magazine, The Washington Times, American Thinker, Police Magazine, and other publications.

Jeffrey is a retired DEA supervisory special agent and an expert in narco-terrorism. He attained the first two narco-terrorism convictions in history. Jeffrey also convicted the most prolific heroin trafficker in the world and participated in several of the largest drug seizures on record. Jeffrey worked for the Drug Enforcement Administration for over 20 years. During that time, he was assigned as a special agent in New York City, the assistant country attaché in the Kabul Country Office, an assistant team leader on DEA’s foreign tactical teams, a special agent with the Narco-Terrorism Group, and a supervisory special agent in Washington, DC. He has received numerous awards, including the DEA Award of Valor and the Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Heroism.

Before joining DEA, Jeffrey’s worked as a reporter and news editor for a string of weekly and biweekly newspapers in Massachusetts. Later, he became a deputy sheriff with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, in Tampa, Florida. In 2014, Jeffrey was elected as a commissioner for the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions in Washington, DC, where he served until 2016.

Jeffrey is an active member of the Authors Guild, The Virginia Writers Club, The Northern Virginia Writers Club, International Thriller Writers, and the Royal Writers Secret Society. He has a Master of Science in criminal justice, from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelor of Science in journalism, from Boston University.
